History of the community, back to overview

A railroad town that grew up around the Army post next door.

Killeen was founded in 1881 when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid track through Bell County, and for its first half-century it was a small farming and shipping town for cotton and cattle.

The town changed for good in 1942, when the Army opened Camp Hood next door. Most of the housing south of the city center, including this area, was built from the 1980s onward as the post expanded.
